Bio:

As an educator, community activist, and volunteer, for the past 12 years Andy has immersed himself in making Athens a better place in which to live and work. This dedication and experience will serve him well as Athens-Clarke County Commissioner.

Even as a young boy, Andy saw firsthand how community service can have a positive impact on so many. Andy’s beloved grandfather, David ''Dai'' Davies, an unassuming steelworker from a rural village in Wales, was a well-known community activist who helped to found the Welsh Development Agency and who was involved with the Workers Educational Association in Britain.

Andy learned early on about the value of education. After high school, to earn money for college Andy worked for some time in a factory. From this experience, he saw hardworking people from all walks of life in their daily struggles to make ends meet. Andy went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in Geography from the University of Bristol in England. He received a scholarship to attend West Virginia University where he received his Master’s degree, and he earned a PhD from Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Andy’s first job out of college was as an Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Georgia. He is now a Full Professor and his research and teaching focus on the global economy and issues of social justice. Andy’s commitment to service spills over into his worklife as well – he currently serves as Chair of the UGA President’s Faculty Advisory Committee, is a member of University Council, and served on the UGA Ad Hoc Committee to address issues affecting low wage workers on campus.

Andy’s love of Athens is evident in the many, many volunteer hours he has committed to service to the community. In 2002, the Athens Banner-Herald featured Andy’s community work in an article on Athens citizens who “exhibit the spirit of community.”

Andy married Jennifer Frum in 1998 and Green Acres is their home. Jennifer, originally from West Virginia, has worked in Public Service and Outreach at the University of Georgia since 1995.
